St. Mary MacKillop was born on the 15th of January, 1842 in Melborne. When she grew up she had great faith in God, and with the help of Father Julian Tenison Woods, began the first St Joseph’s school in Penola. The school provided an orphanage and free education for children. She was canonised on Sunday the 17th October 2010. Tradgically, Mary MacKillop died on the 8th of August 1909 in Alma Cottage, North Sydney. We remember her by following our school motto ‘To Love, To Learn and To Serve’. At this school we also follow and stand by her charism: Never see a need without doing something about it; Do your bit; Make room for all; and Have an attitude of gratitude; and Listen to God’s call.

Cricket Coaching
We have been lucky enough to receive cricket coaching from some Northland senior cricketers. Stephen Cunis and the "Educare North Coaching Team" have been showing us how to catch, throw and bowl a ball correctly. Our next session is on the correct technique for batting. All the children have enjoyed the sessions so far. The lessons are based on both skill and through using a 'games sense' approach. Thanks guys for demonstrating to us the necessary skills to play cricket and help develop a love for the game. Who knows... there might be a future Black Cap or White Fern among the class!

Haere mai, Miss Redwood
Kia ora!
My name is Jessie Redwood. I am a first year student doing
my degree in primary teacher education at the University of Auckland in Tai
Tokerau Campus. I have been placed in room 14 with Mr Werder for the next five
weeks for my first year practicum. I did a week in this class in the first term
and had a lot of fun getting to know the students and helping them with their
learning.
I spent my primary years at Saint Francis Xavier and it has
not changed. It is still a wonderful school with great students and teachers. I
then went to Pompallier Catholic College and spent my intermediate and high
school years there.
I am really looking forward to getting to know and work with
the children in room 14 to help them with their learning. I look forward to
meeting you while I am on my practicum.
Regards
Jessie Redwood
