Plastic in the Ocean

Today, Anton spoke to us about Plastics in the Ocean.  We learnt about the following:
-plastic was discovered about 40 years ago.
-85% of litter on the beach and in the ocean comes from the land.
-19 billion plastic bags fall into the Californian ocean each year.
-'disposable' means only to use once, and the word 'useable' means that we can use it several times.
Anton showed us a video clip (below) showing how a plastic shopping bag eventually ends up littering our ocean.  We decided to go for a walk along Percy Street to clean up litter from the kerb.  In half an hour, we picked up two bags of waste.  We are now more mindful of the what goes down our drains and then into our harbour.  This impacts on all of us.  Thanks Anton for spreading the message about ways we can care for our environment.

Are You a Bucket Filler or a Bucket Dipper???

Whaea Shelley has been teaching us about ways we can be positive around others.  She read us a book called, "Have You Filled a Bucket Today?" by Carol McCloud.  It is a heartwarming book that encourages 'positive behaviour' as children see how very easy and rewarding it is to express kindness, appreciation, and love on a daily basis.  Ka pai to mahi!!!
