The Beautiful Game of Football at SFX

Owen and Josh (North Force) have been teaching us football skills and games.  They showed us how to dribble and pass the ball.  We also learnt how to defend and attack another player when in a game situation.  We played games to help develop our skill level and confidence.  Thanks guys for showing us how to play the beautiful game of football.

Zero Waste...turning organic waste into soil!!!

Anna (Eco Solutions) came to talk to us about Zero Waste.  She informed us about the importance of looking after our soil and that it is a taonga to all of us.  It is important to compost our scraps or use our worm farms, instead of throwing organic waste in the rubbish. Composting is important because organic waste is changed into a rich soil by bacteria, worms and insects.  The secret and simple recipe for composting is: browns (for carbon) plus greens (for nitrogen) plus air plus water.  So just get out there and reduce the amount of organic waste you throw away each week by composting instead...your garden will love you for it!!!

Catholic Schools Day

Our school celebrated New Zealand Catholic Schools Day on May 22nd with mass.  After mass, some homing pigeons were released with great anticipation and excitement!  Pompallier Catholic College (Whangarei) and St. Joseph's (Dargaville) were our guests for the day.  Each whanau joined in the celebration by immersing in art activities, a concert, and just enjoying the unique culture all three Northland schools have in common.  Catholic schools from across the country enjoyed the special bond they have with each other by doing sporting and cultural activities.

Arbor Day - 5th June

Arbor Day is a day where people are encouraged to plant and care for trees.  Arbor Day originated in the United States but is celebrated around the world.  Kauri Whanau celebrated this special day (which was also World Environmental Day), the planting of a kauri tree.  Each class nominated one member to assist in the planting of the tree with our caretaker, Mr. Hacker.  Special thanks to Nandor's whanau for kindly donating the tree.
